Historical Bewdley, Ontario

Thanks to the many readers on this post, this new information has been added to the original post from July 5, 2017. see : Historic Bewdley A reader wrote “in the early 50’s coming into Bewdley at the S bend (former Highway #28) at the S bend at the right was called the Old Swamp Road. It went to our school SS #15. Next on the left was our gravel pit. It is cleared out now and is used for overflow parking for boats and trailers. On the lake to the right is a marina, it was not there then. Along the lake at this time was quite a few docks right up to Don Sidey’s Restaurant. Some of the docks were private and some belonged to McCullis Cottages on the hill. They were the ones from Ranger’s pictures, but were all clapboard then. Don and Verna had the only store/restaurant directly on the lake. It was a large two story building with an attic. Don also had docks and rented boats and motors, he also sold gas, but it was from an on ground tank. Also at this time there there was docks all the way to Mr. Farr’s docks which is where the LCBO is now”.

“Across the road from Don and Verna’s was Captain Hancocks, he had about six cottages plus his own. Where Dora’s Art Studio is was a large restaurant called Nicholsen’s. There was a dance hall there to. In that restaurant they had some of the largest muskies caught in Rice Lake with a taxidermist beautiful display on the walls. Dora and Tom lived on Lake Street then. Besides Nicholsens where the pizza place is now used to be Nellie’s Inn. Across the road was Ray’s Restaurant and the Pizza Place. The next restaurant where Rhinos (Roadhouse) is I think Susan Linderman’s family had it and it was painted green. Next door was Marilyn Annsels store. Across the road was a big yellow store. Mr. Farr had that store where his daughter helped out. Up on Lake Street was the Fire Hall and Community Center. Across Highway 28 was the Harry & Bud Goss garage. On the front, the sidewalk ran from Sideys to Percy Farr’s boat house”. An interesting reader comment: “I remember dating a girl named Jackie Reardon whose family used to stay a few weeks in Bewdley in the summer. Does anyone remember that family? It would be great for me to reach out to her at this stage of my life”. Linda Keeping wrote, “my grandparents owned the Shamrock Cottages, they were John & Eliza (Lily) Emerson”.

Don Holdaway wrote: “Beth, hopefully you are still reading this wonderful message string. Diane Holdaway was my cousin. Bob was her father. My uncle Bob was named after his uncle Robert who owned and ran the Holdaway Hotel in Bewdley. For those still reading,my uncle Bob’s wife was Kate.
